Last year, nothing separated George Russell and Max Verstappen in the qualification for the Canada Grand Prix, since the two drivers published identical times in the third quarter in the front of the field. Only the rules, who claim that the driver who publishes the first time, put Russell in the position of the pole ahead of Verstappen.
The two pilots did not separate much a year later, since again the couple will start in advance with Russell in P1, since their time in the third quarter was only 0.060 seconds faster than its Red Bull driver. However, the Mercedes driver admitted after the session that he could have an advantage when the duo, who faced in the last week, goes to curve 1 on Sunday.
That advantage? Verstappen’s penalty situation.

When asked about the beginning of the races after the qualification, Russell joked saying that Verstappen’s penalty situation could give him an advantage.
“I have some more points on my license to play, so we see,” Russell said after qualifying, to the roar of the crowd.
The Mercedes driver described his pole position and the final lap, as “stimulating.”
“That last turn was likely one of the most exciting laps of my life,” Russell said. “In my steering wheel, you have the delta, and I just saw every corner, I was becoming faster, faster, faster.
“I got into the last corner and I had six tenths, I thought,” Very well, this return is powerful. “Crossing the line and seeing that we were P1 was a real surprise, but I was very happy with it.”
This was the sixth position of Russell’s career and the first of the season for the Mercedes pilot. He is currently fourth in the classification of the Formula 1 drivers championship … 26 points behind Verstappen.
