Representative Gerald E. Connolly de Virginia, an eight -period Democrat, announced on Monday that he would not see re -election and would soon give up his position as the main Democrat in the House Supervision Committee, while facing cancer.
Connolly, 75, announced at the end of last year that he was being treated for esophageal cancer, but planned to fight the disease while he continued doing his job in Washington, saying he was “trusting a successful result.”
In a letter to his constituents on Monday, he said that the disease, “although it was initially defeated, has now returned,” caused its decision to set aside and finally retire. Connolly said he planned to do “everything possible” to finish what he said was his last term.
“I’m going to step back as a classification member of the Son of the Supervision Committee,” Hey. “Without resentment and a complete heart, I move to this final chapter full of pride in what we have achieved together for 30 years.”
Mr. Connolly’s announcement was not clear when he could deliver his post, and a spokesman did not respond to a request for comments. The representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, the Republican of the GEORGIA Fire brand, leads the panel on that effort and has used her hanger to echo the statements of Mr. Musk about government waste.
But Mr. Connolly’s successor will not be without electricity. The classification member supervises a great staff and may request minority research and hearings to highlight concern issues. The position is also a valuable platform for legislators, and the replacement of Mr. Connolly would be in a privileged position to direct the committee if the Democrats return to the majority of the camera in 2026.
Connolly, whose district includes a substantial number or federal workers made by the efforts of Mr. Musk, an internal battle for the paper last year won over the representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez or New York. His victory was seen as a blow for a younger group of Democratic legislators who have rejected antiquity in favor of generational change.
