Early Life & Cultural Heritage

Gabriela Salas’s life story begins far from the spotlight in Puerto del Caballo, a small rural community in Hidalgo, Mexico where indigenous traditions and language shaped her earliest years. Growing up, Gabriela was immersed in Nahuatl, one of Mexico’s ancient indigenous tongues. As modernization threatened its survival, she and her mother became among the few remaining native speakers in their village. This cultural inheritance would later become the heart of her life’s mission: preserving identity through innovation.

From the outset, Gabriela wasn’t afraid to dream big. Inspired by her grandmother’s role as a caregiver, she initially aspired to become a midwife and then a gynecologist. But life had other plans and opportunities guiding her toward a path that would blend her deep cultural roots with science and technology.

Education & Turning Points

Gabriela’s academic journey began with a degree in Information Technology Engineering at the Technological University of Tula-Tepeji. It was here that her passion for science and technology ignited. Despite being one of the few women from a rural background in her class, she excelled driven by curiosity, resilience, and the unwavering support of her family. Her father’s guiding words “The day you finish your studies, you will know how to defend yourself” became a personal mantra.

Seeking deeper expertise, Gabriela pursued advanced studies, earning a master’s degree in Artificial Intelligence and later furthering her education in Data Science at the Polytechnic University of Madrid. Her journey through academia not only honed her technical skills, but also broadened her perspective on how technology can serve cultural communities.

Championing Indigenous Languages in Tech

Gabriela’s defining breakthrough came in 2024, when she answered a call from Google to integrate indigenous languages into its translator platform. For centuries, Nahuatl had been excluded from mainstream digital tools a silence Gabriela was determined to change.

Armed with years of painstakingly gathered recordings, vocabularies, traditional texts, and oral histories, she presented a database that became essential for Google to include Nahuatl in its translation system. This achievement marked a historic moment: for the first time, a language spoken by millions of indigenous people could be digitally accessed on a global scale.

Her work garnered international acclaim. The BBC recognized Gabriela as one of the 100 most inspiring and influential women of 2024, and UNESCO honored her as the first indigenous woman in her field. These distinctions reflect not only personal excellence, but also a broader victory for cultural preservation and digital inclusion.

Recognition & Advocacy

Gabriela’s achievements extended beyond global tech platforms. In 2025, Forbes Mexico named her among the 100 Most Powerful Women in the Nation, celebrating her contributions to cultural heritage through cutting‑edge technology. Grupo Milenio Her advocacy resonates deeply: she believes that access to information should not be limited by linguistic background or geography.

For Gabriela, the success of integrating Nahuatl into Google Translate wasn’t just technical — it was symbolic. It represented a reclaiming of identity for indigenous communities historically marginalized in digital spaces. Her ongoing mission now includes establishing a center dedicated to recovering and promoting indigenous languages from Nahuatl to Mayan, Zapotec, Mixtec, and beyond.

Legacy & Impact

Today, Gabriela Salas stands as a bridge between worlds: between tradition and innovation, heritage and technology, community and global influence. She uses her platform not only to celebrate her achievements, but to uplift others especially young women and girls to pursue education, challenge stereotypes, and reshape the future.

Her journey from a small village in Hidalgo to international recognition is more than a personal success story. It is a testament to the power of resilience, cultural pride, and the belief that technology can be a tool for empowerment. Gabriela continues to inspire countless others to turn roots into wings and vision into reality.
