F1 Saudi GP: Piastri beats Verstappen, leads drivers’ championship | Motorsports News

Oscar Piastri’s victory put Australia on top of the World Formula One Championship for the first time since 2010.

McLaren’s Oscar Piestri came to victory in the Grandbia of Saudi Arabia of Formula one to move at the top of the driver’s championship after five races in the season.

The 24 -year -old became the first pilot this season to win as long as he did not start at Pole, and ended the race comfortably before the runner -up Max Verstappen or Red Bull, whom he received a five -second penalty for the race in Suning to Vsenage.

Charles Leclerc finished third to give Ferrari his first podium of the season. Pastri’s McLaren teammate, Lando Norris, finished fourth, while George Russell de Mercedes finished fifth and Kimi Antonelli was sixth.

With his third victory of the season, and the second consecutive after winning in Bahrein last week, Piastri becomes the first Australian pilot to lead the classification of the pilot championship from Mark Webber in 2010. It is the first time Piestri has.

Piastri, who began the race from the second position on the initial network, finally touched the leadership on the 6.1 km (3.8 miles) track after Verstappen served its five -second penalty duration of a five -second stop in boxes in the lap 22. He finished with a fifty -fourth race. The goal line 2.84 seconds ahead of the current world champion.

In addition to the racial victories of 2025 in Saudi and Bahrain Arabia, Piastri also won the second race of the season in China. McLaren has won four of the five races after Norris won the opening race of the season in Australia.

Verstappen’s finalist occurred after he won the Saudi Arabia Grand Prix in two of the last three years.

In the pilot championship, Piastri has 99 points for the 89 of Norris and the 87 of Verstappen. The McLaren champions stretched their leadership over Mercedes in the classification of the builders at 77 points.
