Excellence in leadership requires determination, experience and spirit no less demanding than an Olympic level performance. And it’s time for us to see it to see it that way.
The business is a sport, and leaders are their unrecognized athletes
The main athletes are celebrated for their achievements: the record spherist, the Mariscal de Campo Estrella, the legend of tennis that presents a return after an injury. In contrast, high performance executives of the skepticism of the meeting, even disdain. Success in the boardroom can evoke criticism faster than admiration sometimes.
However, leading a business, special at level C, requires the same ingredients that feed elite performance in sports: preparation, resilience, ethical behavior and hunger at the highest level. Like the big athletes, the great leaders win playing hard, supporting the rules, raising their teams and achieving measurable results. And when they succeed, their “trophy” is different: it is the growth they drive, the lives and the races that impact, and yes, the profits or the wages they win.
Building the mental play book of a commercial athlete
Success at the top is not supported only by intellect or experience. It is built constantly exercising mental resistance. Through years of executive coaching, a central set of techniques has stood out as a critic for success.
- Reconnecting the mission
The setbacks are inevitable. The offers fall. The competitors overcome you. A leader who looks at each lost point burns quickly. Instead, mental resilience begins with zoom: remember the biggest mission. Perhaps you are the CEO of a medical device company with the mission of helping to live more happier lives. Connect again with that goal and make sure the equipment does. After a loss, the best leaders do not ask: “How did I fail?” They ask: “What am I finally here to achieve, and how do I move towards that now?”I have seen great leaders to rename in their broader goals instead of becoming obsessed with a bad quarter or a difficult meeting of the Board. Like athletes who brush a bad game, executives must learn and emphasize quickly, anchored in a purpose, re -focusing the next “victory”, not only for them but for all their “fans” and interested parties.

In my experience, when we use behavioral tools such as disc profiles, the emotional patterns of thesis leaders under stress often reflect them closely under normal conditions. They are predictable, reliable and trust to lead not only through victories, but also through turbulence. While it is known that great athletes manage to pass when things get difficult, their statistics tend not only to be notable, but also quite predictable.
In a market where volatility is the norm, this consistency becomes the greatest competitive advantage of an executive.

We easily applaud athletic greatness. It is time to recognize that true business leadership, when done with integrity, resilience and excellence, is equally deserving of admiration.
Leading as a commercial athlete means training the mind as rigorously as the body. It means playing with a purpose, recovering with intention and winning with the character. Those who dominate these skills not only build successful companies. They build durable legacies.
And deserve to pride each trophy of hard housing along the way.
