Beatles fans may just scream and twist with delight.
Record label Universal Music Group (UMG.AS) announced on Thursday that a new Beatles song featuring the voice of late member John Lennon will be released the following week. The song was created using artificial intelligence.
Entitled “Now and Then,” the song—which is regarded as the final composition by the Beatles—also includes verses recorded by George Harrison, Paul McCartney, and Ringo Starr.
“John’s voice was there, unmistakable,” McCartney said in a statement. It’s quite sentimental. And it’s a real Beatles album that we all play on.
“In 2023 to still be working on Beatles music, and about to release a new song the public haven’t heard, I think it’s an exciting thing.”
“Now and Then” began when John Lennon made a home recording in New York City in the late 1970s. Lennon was assassinated there in 1980. 1970 saw The Beatles’ dissolution. Cancer claimed Harrison’s life in 2001.
“Now and Then” was one of the recordings that Lennon’s widow, Yoko Ono, gave to the other Beatles, who recorded their own parts to it, years after her husband’s passing. However, due to technological constraints, Lennon’s piano and vocals were unable to be separated to create the distinct mix needed to complete the song.
The concept to resurrect the song came up as a result of Peter Jackson’s 2021 documentary series “The Beatles: Get Back,” which used artificial intelligence to separate the vocals and instruments.
Then McCartney and Starr finished “Now and Then,” using the same technology, according to Universal. On November 2, it will be released globally at 1400 GMT.
With reference to Lennon, Starr remarked, “It was very emotional for all of us. It was the closest we’ll ever come to having him back in the room.” “You know, it seemed like John was there. It is far away.
