Google Meet can now do AI-powered live voice translation

You already know the Google translator, but what about the live voice translation on Google Meet?

This feature is one of the main work space ads that Google shared in its annual I/O event on Tuesday. As of today, Google is implementing the translation of real -time speech on Google Meet for subscribers or its AI Award Plan. When a user in a Google complies with video calls in this function, an audio model of IA uses their speech to translate what they say in another language. Google is starting with English and Spanish, with more languages in the coming weeks.

The experience results in the real voice of the person who is heard at a low volume, with the translated voice heard at a regular volume. The demonstrations of speech translation show a moment of latency of the letter before the live translation begins. “Think of the simultaneous interpreter, or some who listen to a speaker while the words in another language are competitors,” said Yulie Kwon Kim, vice president of products for Google’s work space in an informative session prior to the event, “and then the destiny of the person, where the interpreter is the interpreter. Voice.”

Mashable light speed

Kwon Kim highlighted how the underlying technology is trained to capture “the tone, intonation and emotion of the speaker in translated language”, resulting in a free flow conversation with some in a different language.

If you have ever trusted Google Translate or other translation application to communicate with a taxi driver in a foreign country or order a menu in a different language, it is likely that you understand the utility that changes the game of live translation. Google used the example of speaking with an Airbnb host about an upcoming trip, but you could also imagine talking with family members or conducting research with people who speak a different language.

Of course, there is a bit of sadness associated with the premise that perhaps we never need to live a new language if technology like this extends more. But it has an undeniable potential to communicate important information in a hurry.

The speech translation on Google Meet is launched today in Beta for the subscribers of the Google One AI Premium Plan, which costs $ 20 per month. Google says he is testing the function for work space customers at the end of this year.
